Satellite Navigation
Driving is fun. However, driving in circles is not. Global Navigation Satellite System or GNSS is the standard category term for a satellite navigation system. The NAVSTAR or Global Positioning System (GPS) was developed by the United States Department of Defense and is the only fully operational GNSS. More than two dozen GPS satellites circle the earth transmitting signals that allow GPS receivers to determine the receiver’s location, speed and direction and best of all GPS is free for civilian use.

However not everybody has a GPS receiver, yet almost everyone can have one these days. Prices for traditional receivers are coming down along with entertainment systems. Sooner or later you will need a GPS receiver, even if you rarely travel far from home. GPS receivers can lead you to the nearest restaurant or gas station. They can find you detours when familiar routes are blocked.
You can purchase a Satellite Navigation System installed in the dash of your car. Many newer vehicles come with GPS systems and factory installed neatly in your dash. But so do many aftermarket systems. Portables GPS systems often just plug into your cigarette lighter and are handy to take from one car to another. Navigation by laptop calls for more than just the computer and GPS receiver. Special software will be needed for your laptop. For long trips, extra power supplies or batteries will also be needed. You can also navigate by cell phone and don’t forget the “OnStar” option.
