Rocket Mail Stamps and Covers
Rockets have been utilized for over 1000 years. The Chinese were the first to master the mixing and use of gunpowder in 200 BC. By 1000 AD they were using gunpowder to propel ballistic fire arrows.
Mail has been delivered by rockets for a long time. In 1870 a French patent was granted for postal rockets and rockets were apparently used as early as 1902 to deliver mail from ship to shore in the Fiji islands. But the idea could not progress until the development of rockets progresses further.
Although Rocket Mail was originally developed to deliver mail to isolated locations, it is currently used primarily to commemorate events or to promote rocketry and space travel.
The first "Rocket Mail" generally accepted by collectors was flown on Feb. 2, 1931 when 102 covers and cards were launched by Friedrich Schmiedl near Radegund, Austria. The first U.S. Rocket Mail flight was on July 1, 1931 at Struthers, Ohio. The most successful early rocket mail pioneer was Stephen Smith in India who initiated some 80 rocket mail flights. Many other countries have had Rocket Mail flights starting in the 1930's.
In the 1930's mail was usually transported in container either in the nose or attached to the side of the rocket. A safe landing was achieved by the deployment of a parachute from the rocket's nose as it descended.
