Precious metals have been used as a medium of exchange since the start of time here on earth. Coins first made their appearance in Lydia in Asia Minor. First came small ingots of precious metals stamped with their purity and weight. Soon after the rulers in Lydia adopted small coins to be used as a medium of exchange. This practice soon spread quickly in Asia Minor and throughout the Mediterranean. Each ancient coin was produced by hand with special dies in gold, silver and bronze. Most ancient coins on the market today were found in hoards of coins that were buried.
